I did the pre-order of The Hamilton MixTape a while back, so I was able to get some of the tracks early. Those early tracks weren’t bad (with the exception of Kelly Clarkson … just wrong). The rest of the album came out earlier this week and I finally had a chance to listen to the rest of them today. I have to say … I think this is a very eclectic set of songs based/inspired by Hamilton. And there’s more good here than bad.
In no particular order, here the list of the songs that I recommend to be on a regular listened playlist:
- Dear Theodosia (feat. Ben Folds) – Regina Spektor
- Cabinet Battle 3 (Demo) – Lin-Manuel Miranda
- Wait for It – Usher
- Helpless (feat. Ja Rule) – Ashanti
- That Would Be Enough – Alicia Keys
- You’ll Be Back – Jimmy Fallon & The Roots
- My Shot (feat. Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz & Nate Ruess) – The Roots
- Immigrants (We Get The Job Done) – K’naan, Snow Tha Product, Riz MC & Residente
- Satisfied (feat Miguel & Queen Latifah) – Sia
- Wrote My Way Out – Das, Dave East, Lin-Manuel Miranda & Aloe Blacc
- No John Trumbull (Intro) – The Roots
- An Open Letter (feat. Shockwave) (Interlude) – Watsky
- Burn – Andra Day
Of course, it would be fair if I didn’t give you some tracks to avoid on the album. But give them a listen at least once, since your tastes may not be the same as mine. Again, these are in no particular order:
- Valley Forge (Demo) – Lin-Manuel Miranda
- Washingtons By Your Side – Wiz Khalifa
- History Has Its Eyes on You – John Legend
- Say Yes to This – Jill Scott
- Who Tells Your Story (feat Common & Ingrid Michaelson) – The Roots
- It’s Quiet Uptown – Kelly Clarkson
- Take a Break (Interlude) – !llmind
- Congratulations – Dessa
- Stay Alive (Interlude) – J. Period & Stro Elliot
- Dear Theodosia (Reprise) – Chance the Rapper & Francis and the Lights
No matter which tracks are your favorites or are the ones you hate … this collection is a great tribute to a wonderful musical … and in a way, to a great Founding Father!
Go check it out!
